Plants, such as a wheat crop, will harvest about 2% or so of the sun's energy bathing their leaves. If we eat this wheat, we ingest much of this energy and will be able to digest a proportion of it, but if we feed the wheat to cattle they will themselves lose about 90% of the wheat energy ingested and pass on only about 10% to humans. Thus we could produce more food on less land.
